Show HN: Muuted – I built a feed that knows when to shut up
- Caldwellone 2mo agoI love reading.. My fav online source was brutalist.report… It's just headlines.. really simple. My only gripe, it pulls a crap-ton of articles I do not care about. Easily half of what I am scrolling past is pure garbage. And my Google News blocklist is no better, easily runing 2000+ sources deep. So a few years ago, I had ChatGPT write me a genius little JavaScript bookmarklet for IOS that hid headlines by keyword. It was simple elegance and It worked great but it broke constantly. So i asked Claude if we could build our own RSS feed and I spent about over 300 hours designing what is now called Muuted.com. That broken bookmarklet grew into a monster. I created a RSS database from scratch that IMO, rivals even Feedlys. I Designed the Ui from scratch. Tested it with family and friends (thanks for your patience), Heck, i even built a back end workorder system that automacally creates tickets based on your feedback from them ( and hopefully you)…. I designed The onboarding.. the tour.. everything. It’s been a one person show. The result is simple.. you add the stuff you like to read and watch on YouTube or listen to and Mute the literal words or phrases you don’t want to see.. And every story it hides lands in a forensic list with the exact reason it was caught so you can investigate how it got there. Nothing disappears for a reason you cannot see. So if you’re interested.. check it out at muuted.com. There is a generous free account that is good for most people. It gives you 50 sources and 20 muted words, Pro is $4/mo or $36/yr, and the first 50 accounts get six months of Pro free. https://muuted.com https://muuted.com
- Simon2712 2mo agoVery interesting app! I like the idea, here's some feedback: - landing page is very cluttered, space things out, remove pointless stuff (the "welcome back" banner; so much text, so many AI looking boxes; move FAQ to another page; etc.) - UI of app itself is very hard to use (you have a lot of features which is good, but it doesn't feel too intuitive to use). Finding were to create new things to mute is hard, sometimes I just want to mute politics for a day and unmute after, it's hard to do currently. Also UI looks very AI, again at least make things breathe, make colors not that crazy. Maybe try to separate things more logically. - I love the loud cloud thing and the side bar in general, very cool TLDR: declutter, declutter, declutter. unslop UI
- Caldwellone 2mo agoThanks Simon, This is exactly why i posted here first.. I haven’t received much feedback from my friends and family. I took your declutter feedback and ran with it since that was the simplest thing i could fix quickly. I also get what your saying about the UI too..I designed it around my needs and haven’t recieved a lot of feedback from others. My sister had a similar reaction but she’s not very technical so its hard to judge. I’ll try to work on your suggestions over the next few weeks and try to make it more user friendly. And I love your idea about unmuting something for a bit.. that is actually built into it on a toggle but it’s a bit hidden in the settings and it’s more an all or nothing toggle. It’s a great idea to add to the list so ill work on that. I really appreciate your feedback…. it carries a ton of weight.
