Show HN: Hope, 1-on-1 AI Tutor for kids Grades 2-10 learning math
Hey HN! My friend and I have been working for the last 3 months on HOPE, a platform that provides students with 1 on 1 math support to improve their confidence and teach them by doing and asking questions.
We would really appreciate anyone who's down to try it out with their kids and give their thoughts.
- pasha_k 2mo agoOne way we have been iterating on HOPE is by offering families free tutoring sessions. Sitting on a call with a student shows us exactly where the product could be better. If you are interested in free math tutoring for your child, you can learn more at https://usehope.app/learn-more https://usehope.app/learn-more
- crypto-a 2mo agoHow do you track the students progress in hope?
- pasha_k 2mo agoHOPE tracks student mastery across 80+ math subjects. As a student shows mastery on a subject, it unlocks more advanced topics of math. Mastery is measured by how long it took a student to answer a question, the type of questions the student asked the AI, if they asked for hints/pictures, etc.
- danieldratschuk 2mo agoThe general idea seems decent, and "just slightly above your skill level" is a real learning technique. One thing I'd be careful with is hints. In math you need to struggle through a problem to really get it, and students tend to instantly look the hint up instead. Self-restraint doesn't work here, so I'd think about how the app gates them (couldn't tell how you handle this since I didn't sign up). Some smaller notes on the landing page: it looks really good, but it feels very abstract, so it wasn't immediately clear to me what the product actually does. The hero demo would be the place that shows it, but it moves too fast to read. Also "Hope" sounds slightly depressing for a tutoring app, like "this is my last hope for better grades", haha. Good luck!
- pasha_k 2mo agoAppreciate the feedback! From our data, kids don't request for hints unless they need it but it definitely makes sense to have some form of a gate. As for the website, that's an open problem. Was there a specific part that didn't make sense or was too ambiguous?
- danieldratschuk 2mo agoTook another look to be specific. I think the information is actually all on the page, but it's never said in a plain sentence. The headline gives the outcome ("A grade ahead in math") and the sections give the feeling ("Never boring. Never impossible.", "A quiet starting point"), so I had to piece together the actual workflow myself from the Sketch / Show work on paper / Ask Hope cards. Something like "Hope gives your kid a problem, they work it out on paper or the sketchpad, Hope reads the work and nudges" never appears anywhere, even though after reading the whole page I believe that's what it is. Also the hero replay moves too fast to actually read the exchange, and that demo is the one thing that would show what Hope does.
- davidest 2mo agoThanks for the feedback!!
- mjiang41 2mo agowhat kind of students is this designed for?
- davidest 2mo agoThe platform is designed for parents and kids between grades 2-10! It supports students who are overachieving and underachieving.
- wahtsupguys 2mo agoLove it!
- seeronsiva 2mo agoHow do you intend to take this product to market? Seems very useful for young students who may not have the resources to learn at home.
