A Gallery of Installing from .dmg
- wpwpwpw 2mo agoOh the good old Adium. One of the best apps ever created. 20 years later, there's still no match for it.
- fragmede 2mo agoBeeper does the best it can with today's technologies.
- ricudis 2mo agoAbout half of these designs would confuse me. Some would make me right out refusing to run your software - even from the installation step. I get it that designers like to innovate, but please innovate somewhere else. I want my UI/UX boring, dull and consistent.
- Klonoar 2mo agoArguably the entire flow is just bad UI/UX and Apple should’ve fixed this when they started forcing things to need to be in Applications. There are a number of apps that check if they’re outside that folder on boot and alert the user to either open the right one or actually install it - I.e they ran it from the mounted DMG. I am also so tired of walking people through the absolute basic operations for installing stuff this way. If it’s still catching people this many years later, it’s probably worth just changing. Though I suppose Apple predominantly cares about the App Store as an installation channel and any other friction is fine.
- DownrightNifty 2mo ago> they started forcing things to need to be in Applications Since when? Agree with your other points overall.
- Klonoar 2mo agoI'm a few glasses of wine deep on a long haul flight so I don't remember offhand, but it was far enough back that it was an issue on Catalina - apps would get mounted as read-only (the transliteration problem).

- netsharc 2mo agoThese are all MacOS >= X screenshots. Even on old MacOS there were already such decorative DMGs... In my school one Mac could read DOS disks (i.e. it has a driver for the FAT filesystem), and another could not. So I draggged the "DOS disk support" from Control Panel onto a floppy (copying it), moved the disk to the computer without the capability, and dragged that icon into its Control Panel. Now both computers could read FAT-formatted disks, and I was amazed that the "driver" installation was that straightforward.
- andOlga 2mo agoThe images are pretty, but good lord what horrendous UX. Why are they still stuck with this? Also -- why would someone else be allowed to tweak a user's file manager settings? Insane.
