Nearest Pint
- jrflo 3mo agoReally surprising that Inverness and Skye have only 16 pubs considering how much tourism the area has. I felt like it wasn't lacking for pubs but maybe I saw all 16...
- wetbaby 3mo agoA good third of the pubs are missing in my town tbh and they're definitely still open.
- CiaranMcNulty 3mo agoIt looks like the data is from OpenStreetMap so maybe you could add them if they’re missing there?
- mojo74 3mo agoI would argue it's your civic duty :)
- n4r9 3mo agoIf you click the question mark it has: > Pub data is sourced from the Food Hygiene Rating Service (FHRS) via GetTheData Open Pubs https://www.getthedata.com/open-pubs https://www.getthedata.com/open-pubs
- MrDOS 3mo agoAh, interesting. Searching the dataset for my local area, this seems to include some restaurants, but omits hotels entirely. That's skewing the numbers downward tremendously.

- 2b3a51 3mo agoWhich explains why Spearmint Rhino is listed in Birmingham (hint: you might get a surprise popping in that establishment for a quick pint). So nice interface and all but some data curation will be needed - perhaps on a crowd sourced basis? Click and add comment &c.
- flir 3mo agoI thought about doing something similar pre-Covid. There are commercial datasets that are more complete (Local Data Company was the one I targeted when I was researching), but... well... £000's a quarter. The project would have had to cover its costs, so the idea went to the great backlog in the sky.
- BoxOfRain 3mo agoYeah I'm dogsitting at my childhood home right now and it's missing the rural pubs on the dog route.
- pelagicAustral 3mo agoI was in Inverness a few weeks ago, seems like the tourist season is on, and it was fairly hard to find a pub other than downtown. The other interesting thing is that a lot of them don't seem to not go by the advertised opening times, which later on made total sense based on what an old man told me about the Highlands having their own time.
- lostlogin 3mo agoThere were about as many golf courses as pubs when I went through there - but that was a while back.
- northernsausage 3mo agoIts only 9am in the UK and the demand means its has already serving a 520.
- toolslive 3mo agoOK, I think this will be close to an all time record: Leopoldsburg (Belgium, 14k inhabitants) had more than 150 pubs in the 1980s.
- flir 3mo agoI make that 933:1? Portsmouth (Navy/dockyard town) had 115:1 in the 1860s. (822 pubs and beerhouses against a population of 95k). There was a row of five pubs right outside the dockyard gate. I see Leopoldsburg had a large military camp nearby. Same story?
- toolslive 3mo agoyup. soldiers in dire need of a drink
- kaelyx 3mo agoIm surprised Newcastle upon Tyne isn't higher on this map. I guess its Density of housing near the center dilutes the ratio
- falcor84 3mo agoYou're off by a factor of 10: 14k/150 is ~93 residents per pub.
- flir 3mo agoThanks. Early morning posting. Bet I read "140k".
- martinclayton 3mo agoDataset does seem sketchy. My village has two pubs, neither appear. Two non-pub licensed locations (social club, stately home) do appear. The dot for the pub in the next village is off by about 100m.
- wrboyce 3mo agoHmm, this dataset is pretty poor. There are at least 3 pubs near me that are missing.
- NoboruWataya 3mo agoWhy use FHRS as the source rather than OSM? OSM isn't perfect either but for my area at least it seems a lot more comprehensive.
- wodenokoto 3mo agoI can't find a single pub using this page, let alone the nearest to me.
- rob74 3mo ago> UK Pub Density by Parliamentary Constituency Technically, this is only the pub density in Great Britain - the UK is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", and Northern Ireland is not covered, so...
- stevenfeldman 3mo agoHi I built the pub density map. I think the data from FHRS is more comprehensive than on OSM as it covers bars, clubs etc. If you have an alcohol license you appear in the FHRS data I know there have been some access issues today, I think it is down to Cloudflare changing its bot protection. The app is to compare pub density in your area, it doesn't have a search facility - there are loads of alternatives to search for a pub.
- bean469 3mo agoNorthern Ireland is not covered despite being part of the UK
- spidermonkey23 3mo agoseems like Edinburgh beats Glasgow for the no 5 spot,I guess they have the Fringe to thank
- Syzygies 3mo agoPub tourism is one of my favorite ways to spend a day in London. The pub "density" isn't all it's cracked up to be. To be able to make it to the next pub for a bathroom (and to preserve my ability to walk) I've found half pints to be ideal. Ideally, accompanied here and there by pub food. Bar staff don't universally view half pint orders with respect.
- luxpir 3mo agoApparently not all 8 year old daughters view half pint orders with respect either. It didn't help it was served in one of those mini pint glasses but she ripped me for getting a "tiny lager" while my partner enjoyed a pint. I wasn't aware we'd passed on anything about drinking culture to her yet, but it seems to start early!
