I've stopped closing tabs at some point and use them as a history. Of course, I'm using the kind of browser that keeps your tabs as a horizontal list to the left, not as a ribbon at the top. New tabs appear at the top of the list and the bottom ones become history. The main problem with browser history is that it doesn't remembers tab groups, which I use a lot. Not closing tab groups allows me to easily look up a topic I've been researching 3 months ago and see all of it's tabs.
