Ask HN: Who is firing? (August 2026)
As suggested in a comment(https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48765213) on my previous "Who is quitting?" post I figured I'd give a "who is firing" post a shot :)
- yourfired 2mo agoHow do you define "firing"? I recently had a situation where I was told I would not be completing my probation period because I detected a data breach (in not so many words)... then the person who did that (CIO) was themselves removed from their position. So now they have to hunt for a new CIO and I have to hunt for a new role. Womp womp.
- ethanwillis 2mo agoGood question. I'm intentionally leaving it vague to see what people come up with. Also, I've seen what you are describing a few times. Usually happens in companies with certain financial incentives to hide "problems"
- yourfired 2mo agoYeah, I hoped someone would show up looking for a hacker in the "I wrote a SIEM rule so good it got me fired" sense, but life isn't a television show and there are rarely happy endings for good deeds. (It wasn't a business -- that's what makes it worse. I can choose not to give someone money, but I can't refuse to transact with "The State", so any security issues are compounded.)
- freehorse 2mo agoBe bold. Apply for the CIO position.
- softwaredoug 2mo agoWe have http://layoffs.fyi http://layoffs.fyi and https://www.trueup.io/ https://www.trueup.io/ to name a few places that track this pretty well
