I've read half of the first book but didn't enjoy it as much as the show. I wasn't really a fan of the writing and the show rearranged some storylines around that, in my opinion, gave the story better pacing.

Book two (SHIFT) is the reason the TV show had to move stuff around a lot. It's pretty much unfilmable due to real world reasons, so they're doing it this way instead. Read the books, loved them. Watching the show and I really want to know how they get to the end because of all the changes.
