Ugh, No. 2 literally made me facepalm. Despite that, I still think that's a problem with the writing, not the directing, though he likely could have changed that line if he felt the need. In regards to No. 1, they were already pretty close when they started the 'charge', and the machine gunners were not in trenches. Although far too few people seemed to be getting hit with gunfire during that charge scene.
