- ChrisArchitect 2mo agoA non-html collection of scans for that magazine feel: https://archive.org/details/dr_dobbs_journal https://archive.org/details/dr_dobbs_journal Some related discussion from a few months ago: Dr. Dobb's Developer Library DVD 6 (2010) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47645010 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47645010
- jefflinwood 2mo agoIf you look closely at the author list, you can see that some of the same names still hang out here, which is pretty cool. It's also fun just to look at the article titles to see what the zeitgeist of the era was for a given time period.
- kristianp 2mo agoLike who? I recently noticed an Al Williams who is a writer on hackaday [1]. Turns out he was a regular contributor to DDJ. Not to be confused with Al Stevens who wrote the C Programming column for years. The search on the page seems to be broken at the moment, but the one on https://jacobfilipp.com/thedoctor-search/ https://jacobfilipp.com/thedoctor-search/ still functions. - mrloopex 2mo agoMy first article published there in 1995. Psyched to see it again. I was a terrible writer.
- pjmlp 2mo agoLook ma, my article! Much more interesting though, is the special DDJ issue about C++ successor languages in 1993, already 33 years ago it as a subject relevant enough to warrant a full issue dedicated to it. "Special issue, Beyond C++" https://jacobfilipp.com/DrDobbs/articles/DDJ/1993/9310/9310toc.htm https://jacobfilipp.com/DrDobbs/articles/DDJ/1993/9310/9310t... For all the complaints regarding language names one cannot search for, AT&T wins with C+@, yep that was the name. https://jacobfilipp.com/DrDobbs/articles/DDJ/1993/9310/9310b/9310b.htm https://jacobfilipp.com/DrDobbs/articles/DDJ/1993/9310/9310b... The year thereafter, Perl and TCL were still considered alternative languages, before the Web really took off. https://jacobfilipp.com/DrDobbs/articles/DDJ/1994/9415/9415toc.htm https://jacobfilipp.com/DrDobbs/articles/DDJ/1994/9415/9415t... Or how safety in systems programming is being discussed in the Modula-3 and Oberon articles.
- AdieuToLogic 2mo agoWhat a blast-from-the-past! I still have stacks of DDJ, C/C++ Users Journal, SysAdmin, and The Perl Journal issues in my library. They are right beside some O'Reilly books from the same era I shant part from anytime soon. > Look ma, my article! My guess is that you have implemented a C++ standard library "back in the day." If so, I do not have one of your books but do have what I call "the I/O streams black book"[0]. The C++ I/O streams library was very much underrated IMHO. 0 - https://www.amazon.com/Standard-IOStreams-Locales-Programmers-Reference/dp/0201183951 https://www.amazon.com/Standard-IOStreams-Locales-Programmer...
- pjmlp 2mo agoNah, I am flattered, it was a simple article advocating for Gtkmm and Gnomemm.
- ToddWBurgess 2mo agoFound the December 1994 article I read that was my first introduction to HTML and helped me write my first home page. One of the few articles I read that has stayed with me for over 30 years
