Again I've heard this since 2022 when gpt3.5 came out.
This is like microprocessors in the 80s. Sure they double in capability every 18 months but the start is so pathetic it will be 30 years before they are good enough for everyday tasks.
- StilesCrisis 3mo agoCPUs in the 90s were amazing! They were over-specced for "everyday tasks." Our problem is that we overbuilt CPUs too much, so software is now written with ten unnecessary layers of abstraction because there's no real reason to simplify.
- noosphr 3mo ago3gb of ram aren't enough everyday tasks at any sane resolution. That we still don't have 1200 ppi desktop monitors is as stupid as using black and white screens in 2000.
- StilesCrisis 3mo ago1200ppi! The Apple Studio Display is 218ppi and it's amazingly sharp. What do you need 1200ppi for?
- noosphr 3mo agoTo match the print quality from the 19th century.
- StilesCrisis 3mo agoI am not an expert in book printing from the 1800s. That being said, I don't think they had tolerances anywhere near 1200ppi. You'd need extremely smooth paper with almost no grain for that level of resolution to be possible at all, and you would need to distribute the ink so that it did not smear or bleed at all. Older books I've seen don't seem to possess those qualities.
