  Agree, and the display is called a PPI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_position_indicator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_position_indicator). Before computers, they were easy to connect to a scanning (rotating) radar since the "memory" was the phosphor in the display.
