60% or more of Americans do not support this war (support is below 35%), yet Congress, which is supposed to represent the will of the people, does nothing to stop it. This despite it having gone past 60 days weeks ago, with the House just passed $70 billion more in funds for the war.
- yawpitch 3mo agoAccount for the people think the war is going to bring an entirely fictional End Times, and the support drops to significantly < 5%. Of course magically rapture the same folk from political power and Washington would be instantly devastated by the air rushing in to fill the resulting vacuum in all three branches. Thankfully that will never happen.
- JumpCrisscross 3mo ago> yet Congress, which is supposed to represent the will of the people, does nothing to stop it What fraction of those in the Congress do you think will lose their seat over this? There is a simple truth in most politics: if there isn’t a draft, or there hasn’t been an attack on the homeland, foreign policy is not a top-of-mind issue. This is unfortunately a recurring problem for empires, who can afford to keep conflict far from their shores.
- johng 3mo ago87% or so of Americans support Voter ID but they can't manage to get that passed either :(
- jfengel 3mo agoThe number is 83%, not 87%. And it's a rather dubious way of polling on the question. Voters support voter ID in the abstract, but only a minority of voters support the currently-proposed law. The way you implement voter ID matters a lot. It risks disenfranchising large groups of people, on zero evidence that there is a serious problem that needs solving. So Congress might be able to pass a voter ID law if they wrote it in a way that ensured people could vote, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that you wouldn't support such a law.
- johng 3mo agoI'm for any proposal that proves you are a citizen. The most basic and secure way possible. However, I'm not for just showing a drivers license, because some states allow non citizens to get drivers licenses. I'm also not for ballots without any verification. Ie, that the person that cast it is that person legitimately, and that they are not deceased.
