A game from that era that I wish would inspire some clones is Robosport. I believe it was a Maxis title and was turn-based, but was really clever in that it didn't just feel like a board game that got ported to a computer with some animation tacked on. The version I played was on the Amiga and supported TCP/IP networking (kinda, I actually wrote my first public tutorial to help people get the networking running).
