How did the H1B visa become the 'Indian' visa
- f30e3dfed1c9 3mo agoYou make this too hard to read. Constant scrolling for tiny little chunks of text. Sorry, ain't putting up with that.
- shimman 3mo agoThis is the type of slop that looks okay to amateurs but if you had a professional they could have tweaked this into a well made data visualization (like one you'd find on pudding.cool) rather than a slopified powerpoint presentation.
- StrageMusik 3mo agoAny specific recommendations? I’m always looking to improve.
- BugsJustFindMe 3mo agoSpecific recommendations: 1) None of the animations are useful. None of the scroll gates are useful. They all get in the way. Remove them. All of them. 2) Don't make a person scroll so goddamned much. It's maddening and unnecessary. 3) Have a persistent table of contents on the side if your section headers actually matter. 4) Don't ignore Web Content Accessibility Guidelines for content readability. Your tiny low contrast text hurts my eyes. 5) Don't ignore user preference for dark text on light background.
- StrageMusik 3mo agoThank you
- luisln 3mo agoSo funny to me how you wasted time giving all this feedback but OP is just going to feed it into Claude and not actually read anything you said. Don't reward people that don't care about what they're building with effort, it makes the world a worse place.
- BugsJustFindMe 3mo agoYou're probably right, and yet here I am.

- shimman 3mo agoHonestly in regards to data visualizations just look at others and copy them. For inspiration I heavily go to these two sites: https://pudding.cool/ https://pudding.cool/ https://www.datasketch.es/ https://www.datasketch.es/ One of the people behind data sketches recently came out with a good book on how to think regarding data vizs (and making them unique): https://www.visualcinnamon.com/chart/ https://www.visualcinnamon.com/chart/ Halfway through the book myself, lotta good techniques on how to think about visualizing data sets. Found it way more accessible than many of the more academic books.
- pseudohadamard 3mo agoI was thinking the same thing, another news story(?) set out as a video game. Does anyone have a link to a just-the-facts version, because this one is a tl;dp (too long, didn't play). Also, we get dinged for playing video games during work time.
- 5701652400 3mo agothis is some next level rants
- theandrewbailey 3mo agoDon't fuck with scroll, please. Present the information as a normal page.
- site-packages1 3mo agoI thought the initial scroll thing at the top was kinda cool, but then I scrolled more and it just scrolled up tiny text windows at a time. I had to eject.
- DerekL 3mo agoThe title is misspelled. It's “H-1B”, with a hyphen.
- BrandoElFollito 3mo agoI was actually interested in the contents but the scrolling is unbearable. It looks like some contemporary art and not a web page with stuff to read. No ideas how to design a site (or too many ideas)? The motherfucking website to the rescue! https://motherfuckingwebsite.com https://motherfuckingwebsite.com. It also has theee other incantations. Edit: http://bettermotherfuckingwebsite.com/ http://bettermotherfuckingwebsite.com/ is the next one, and the third one is not worth it
- Glyptodon 3mo agoI wonder if this works better on phones? From part 2 on it seemed like normal scroll to me. It presented some things I didn't know - I thought all H1Bs had to be advertised to US applicants, but it was just done in places nobody sees and applicants ignored, while this says most places don't even need to do that, for example. But I also think its timelines of things in India seemed sort of perfunctory and repetitive. As a tangent, I've long thought that the counterintuitive easy fix for some of the problems with these visas is to convert them to green cards faster (maybe 18 months?) as that should instantly help undo wage suppression pressures.
- alexb23 3mo agoThis is interesting aggregated data for an informative report, but present it like a slide deck. It detracts and annoys rather than engage the reader. As others said, present it as a report, with more details on references for easier checking/diving deeper (e.g. web links!).
