Freeze-Casting

- usui 2mo ago> solution or slurry > suspension or slurry > solution or slurry > suspension or slurry I'm not sure why this has to be specified more than once. Is a "slurry" meaningfully different enough from a "suspension" or "solution" such that it needs to be specified each time?
- monkpit 2mo agoA slurry is a type of suspension, I guess.
- chaboud 2mo agoIt's a carrier medium... and it's pretty thick. I would have just committed to "slurry". Sandy water at the beach that looks a bit brown? Suspension. Mining run off that looks like soup and coats everything? Slurry. What's the Half & Half between milk and cream but for tweaky techniques for fabrication? Slurspension?
- dwoosley 2mo agoThis is a pretty cool concept for hobbyist with a 3d printer who wants one off metal parts. Sure, you can always cast… but it’s not easy. There is a similar way to do this casting with infusion and sintering using metal powder infused FTP printer filament. It shrinks down a bit more than this freeze casting sintering I think but it skips the slurry/freezing step of freeze casting.
- jstanley 2mo agoCan you elaborate on how a hobbyist with a 3d printer could use this process?

- dwoosley 2mo agoI can’t say I’ve done it, just in theory you could print the model to pore on the slurry, directionally freeze it, freeze dry it, and then sinter it… quite a process and may require some specialized tools so I mentioned the FDM infused filament since it’s a similar concept with only a kiln needed.
