NASA's Roman Telescope vs. Webb: the telescope that will map a billion galaxies
- throw0101d 3mo ago> Roman will generate approximately 1.4 terabytes of data per day, 11 terabits per day. Over five years, that adds up to about 20 petabytes. Crikey. At my last job I helped run some HPC where we had 11 PB, and I'm still in HPC and know some folks who got 29 PB of NVMe just before prices went crazy. Hopefully the Roman backend folks locked in prices.

- localdeclan 3mo agoYeah half of NASA's budget is about to be spent on storage alone
- Schlagbohrer 3mo agoHow much could we accomplish if Space Force's budget ($71B) were instead spent on astronomy and astrophysics?
- localdeclan 3mo agoGenuinely what does Space Force even do? Theres no reason they should be given this much money
