> Cece lingered by the door while her mother resumed talking to the thing she was calling Sapphire. Roschelle told it that she wanted to write a book about her daughters. She talked about Zi. “My daughter has autism,” she explained. “And she’s using Eastern philosophy to help her center herself and feel—”
Even if you're smart enough not to share the details of your life with a company that just wants to exploit you any way that they can, you still have to worry about friends and family gossiping about you to AI. I've had some success getting friends and family to avoid posting about me on social media but that's going to be harder if they're using AI as a therapist or a friend
- jagged-chisel 3mo agoEven more reason for AI to be local only.
- boosturpud 3mo agoExactly. Stop trying to foist your "P" into my "AI".
- SoftTalker 3mo agoIf they aren't gossiping about you to AI they are gossiping about you to other real people. Some people just have no sense of respecting other people's confidences and privacy. I figured that out when I was about 8 years old and have really never opened up to anyone since then.

- Rygian 3mo agoThere is a stark difference between gossiping to individuals vs to a multi billion dollar company whose business is to sell ads targeting you.
- tgv 3mo agoOr selling that data to your insurance company or ICE.

- SoftTalker 3mo agoI mean, I don't really care about ads because I block them all anyway. But yes, at best they won't be using it to my benefit.
- SkyeCA 3mo agoThe multi billion dollar company selling ads is of far less concern to me than the gossiping of people in my community
- phainopepla2 3mo agoGossip is a hugely important part of how a community constitutes itself. Without gossip, you don't even have a community. Of course, it can go in malicious and destructive directions as well
- embedding-shape 3mo agoI think you're confusing "gossip" for "communication". You don't have to have gossip to have a community, but what you say is perfectly true if you replace it with "communication".
- olelele 3mo agoI think you have it the wrong way around. The gross product of humans talking about themselves and those around them and gossiping is huge. What else is Twitter really?

- nonameiguess 3mo agoI still feel like this kind of topic is underdiscussed across broader society. A lot of people have their "why I left social networks" story and mine was around 2013 or so when my early 30s friends started having kids, I couldn't help but comment on how uncomfortable it made me seeing them post embarrassing photos of their kids because I was so uncomfortable when I was a kid ever having pictures taken of me, how glad I was to grow up before ubiquitous cameras and blessed by my mom choosing Beta Max over VHS so most of my childhood holiday videos were lost. I didn't feel it was appropriate to be blasting your kids all over the place because you have no idea how they'll feel about it when they grow up and they can't possibly consent because they don't understand themselves. I have never been turned on and had a friend group go ballistic so fast over anything else in my life. Lesson learned, I guess. Never criticize a parent over anything whatsoever, but how are we supposed to advocate for the rights of children as people of their own, rather than the rights of their parents?
