I've been using Gimp since the mid-late 1990's. The first time I used it, I got it running was on a Sun SPARCStation 20 --- which was running Red Hat 2.0 Linux! I still reach for that on the rare occasion I have to do some image editing. There are some alternatives in the FOSS image editing landscape now worth checking out.
