As far as the non-upgradability of the rMBP, I don't think it's as much of a dealbreaker as some people, but Apple really could've done better. Develop a new type of low profile memory module and SSD, I'm sure some people would complain but it would be replaceable/upgradable.
- bitcartel 14y agoApple butchered the standard SATA connector so you can't use third party SSDs from OCZ, Mushkin, Transcend, AData, Kingston etc. Only one vendor, OWC (MacSales), ships a compatible SSD, but of course you can't use it in non-Apple laptops which have a standard SATA connector. - curiousdannii 14y agoThey shouldn't need to when the only difference is the physical shape of the connector.
- felipemnoa 14y ago>>I don't think it's as much of a dealbreaker as some people It is the one big thing that makes me hesitate about buying an rMBP. SSD's are prone to failure according to many articles I've read and they also have a limited life span even if it doesn't have any defects. Once the thing gives up there is no way to easily swap it out and just insert a new one. Also, sometimes I need to swap out hard drives (or SSD drives in this case). With the rMBP that is not possible. The rMBP is a nice computer but I really hope they see the error in their ways and add a replaceable standard SATA SSD.
- rtrunck 14y agoYou can replace the SSD on the rMBP. There aren't a lot of options, but it is possible. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012 http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Retina_2012
