I don't get this author's reasoning here. Maybe the candidate partied all through school but got his career together after graduating. Maybe the candidate went through school and never really figured out what he wanted to do in life until after he graduated. Maybe three years into college the candidate realized he actually hated English but got the degree because he wanted to graduate in four years. The list goes on... Just because someone didn't really do much with their life 5 years ago does not mean they're a useless loser today. I noticed that the author is a "failed investment banker." Maybe there wouldn't be much the author could say about that job either - filling out spreadsheets and formatting Powerpoints are totally fascinating activities.
