This article and the comments here on HN seem to miss the entire point of mobile first (although the comments on the article itself are spot on): mobile first does not mean you're actually intending to build for mobile at all. It means funnel everything your site is trying to accomplish down to how you'd design for small viewports so that the focus is on the most important navigable aspects of your site or service. In knowing where exactly you're trying to send your audience, there are less questions about the hierarchy of elements and calls-to-actions on the rest of your designs.
