This is called cognitive load. You need to think about this in economic terms not financial terms. Yes, a competitor beat you to market but that was going to happen anyways. The problem is not your product. The problem is the effort required. My solution to this is always going lower, not higher, in the stack. There is an upfront cost to this that pays for itself over time. A word of caution though. Most people lack the intelligence and discipline to accomplish this.
