  The problem isn't people valuing certainty and doing deals based on that, the problem is monopoly of supply. You could argue strategic deals like this allow the manufacturers to make the massive capital investments in manufacturing capacity to increase supply. Otherwise it might be simply too risky - and in the end you end up with lower supply and higher average price.
