I simply enabled the nginx-lua - which comes with the debian source - in our custom package. Adding the other stuff would have been nice, but also unnecessary bloat. I did do some investigation into openresty, but decided against it because it would not confer benefits. The other thing is that we custom compile other modules into nginx - tracelytics[1] being one of them - and it was simpler to decipher the debian packaging than it was to do the same for openresty.
