in my experience, it takes a few tries to successfully roll the hard six to get a sympathetic genius. it's not exactly social engineering, but there are some folks who are more likely to take your side especially if you can show that the problem is happening while you're sitting there with them. still, the fact that the applecare universe works like that at all is a bit disheartening especially if you have a legitimate hardware issue but an unsympathetic genius.
