I strongly agree. As an example try to create an Launcher for Eclipse, it is a usability nightmare.
Windows:
Right click > Pin to Taskbar
Mac:
Right click > Options > Keep in Dock
Ubuntu:
gedit ~/.local/share/applications/opt_eclipse.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Eclipse
Comment=Eclipse Integrated Development Environment
Icon=** something like /opt/eclipse/icon.xpm **
