I've benefited from having coding tutors. My path was to pick a project I wanted ti work on, start coding it myself, and then find people who'd be willing to help me figure it out. The thing that took me a while to understand was that lessons tend to be much more effective when I ask the teacher for help with building a specific feature, including architecture, refactoring, and testing. Chris Pine's Learning to Program was a very helpful book, too.
