AMD has delivered a large number of cores (you can cheaply put 64 in a box), but even for embarrassingly parallel applications, you'll struggle to get the same performance as a modern 16 core (real cores; 32SMT threads) Intel box due to smaller FP pipeline, slower clock speeds, etc. (note: not speculation; we have both types of machines in our labs)
