Anyway, a lot can still be gained from architecture alone. Personal wish:
Main RAM gets integrated with CPU, like done with microcontrollers. But with a twist:
Each core gets an equal share of the main RAM for 'private', fast access. RAM outside that can still be accessed but slower, like through a crossbar.
Example: 16 cores would have each core access its 1/16th portion of main RAM with L1/L2 cache like speeds (and the RAM on-chip). Core <-> RAM bandwidth need not even be that high to have enormous aggregate bandwidth.
That would shatter the memory wall designers have battled for so long now.
While we're at it, maybe combine such an array of cpu cores with those from integrated GPU.
