Nextcloud is written in PHP, which doesn't sound scalable to me.
OwnCloud is written in Go but employs an open-core model. Some features are locked behind a proprietary paywall.
- mbesto 4mo ago> Nextcloud is written in PHP, which doesn't sound scalable to me. Lol what? Facebook (pre Hack), Tumblr, Wordpress, Etsy...
- smilespray 4mo agoNextcloud and Wordpress both suffer massively from technical debt.
- mbesto 4mo agoWhat does that have to do with scalability?
- smilespray 4mo agoNice to hear back from you. I'm sure modern PHP code does not prevent scalability, but old PHP code definitely does. Also, and this is slightly beside the point, but last time I tried Nextcloud there were _usability_ "scalability" issues, such as being unable to upload large files in the web GUI due to classic PHP config issues such as client timeout and upload file size limits. Failure to account for modern file size limits is a massive code base red flag. Sure, it's a doddle to fix if you know basic PHP, but it's a sign that the developer doesn't understand the core requirements of the product they are developing.

- cheschire 4mo ago“OwnCloud infinite scale” is written in Go. But ownCloud 10 is php. I tried for weeks to get OCIS working but gave up and went back to ownCloud 10. They’re committed to security updates for 10 but it’s a small company. I doubt it will get much attention sadly.
- c_prompt 4mo ago> I tried for weeks to get OCIS working but gave up and went back to ownCloud 10. I literally just finished my move from Nextcloud to ocis yesterday (Docker). There were so many silly issues (e.g., I spent 2 full days trying to figure out why an image was getting a 500 error, only to learn ocis doesn't support tall images). I have a full install script and integrated motomo too. So ping me if you want to give it another shot. (I deployed Baikal to replace dav functionality.) Nextcloud has all sorts of problems and bloat. It's not worth it anymore to me.
