I speak some Dutch and stofzuiger and ziekenhuis are also pretty similar to the Doric and Norwegian words - Germanic languages (of the Northern and Western types at least) seem to have a great deal of similarity. I'm interested in the grammar issues that the OP raised, but wonder how true their assertions about the unlikelihood of change might be.
