Ex-girlfriend of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt ordered to pay him $10M
- kgwxd 5mo agoThese people never had any shame, but at least the PR blowback, and potential (probably minor) legal punishment, was enough to deter them from attacking the victim again. Now they see the POTUS get away with raping, being "proven" innocence by someone bought and paid for, then suing the victim, so they know they can get away with it too.
- henry2023 5mo agoBefore this comment creates a Dem vs Rep division just remember that Bill Clinton, a democrat POTUS, is also a rapist.
- burnt-resistor 5mo agoThe Trumpstein class only has allegiance to each other and money. Gore Vidal called them "the Property party", and FDR called them "economic royalists".
- alphaomegacode 5mo agoOne of the best things about HN is a fairly troll-free environment. My politics is/was different than Clinton but I don't think he was convicted of that crime.
- SilverElfin 5mo agoYour comment makes it seem like Schmidt is guilty. But the arbitrator here is a retired female judge from Washington state (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beth_M._Andrus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beth_M._Andrus). And she was appointed by a progressive governor. She’s very likely to side with the “victim” in a case like this.

- DangitBobby 5mo ago> Schmidt has denied the accusations under oath. The arbitrator said that Ritter did “everything she could possibly do” to avoid discussing the rape accusations under oath. Uh huh. Everyone knows that it's physically impossible to lie under oath. I don't believe you, Mr. Arbiter.
- garciasn 5mo agoThat's absolutely correct! But, it's not a good look, if the allegations from the arbiter are true, that Ritter wanted to avoid speaking under oath. I don't believe either of them.
- subscribed 5mo agoThankfully everyone also knows that if something could potentially happen, it definitely happened. <puts the tinfoil hat back on> Lying under oath opens the liar to even more problems down the line should the evidence to their lies show up.
- zamadatix 5mo agoThe point of that isn't "what is said under oath is guaranteed true" rather "one side isn't worried about perjury for their claims if they are indeed lying while the other avoids making their claims under oath". Also, it doesn't make sense to address this arbiter as "Mr." - You can read a bit about her here https://www.courts.wa.gov/appellate_trial_courts/bios/?fa=atc_bios.display&folderid=div1&fileID=andrus https://www.courts.wa.gov/appellate_trial_courts/bios/?fa=at...
- DangitBobby 5mo agoI find it hard to believe that someone who was willing to bring false rape allegations would be unwilling to perjure themselves under oath. I also don't really care what the gender of the arbiter is.
- zamadatix 5mo agoYou don't think someone would be unwilling to go from somewhere between "no" to "civil" charges all the way to "criminal felony offense with prison time, plus the other charges"? It doesn't even have to be that 100% of the story is a lie, just adding something to make it worse than it really was qualifies. The problem is you can't identify which part of the story with this information, making it a bit difficult to say which he is supposed to have done and be punished for. It's not okay to misgender a person because you personally don't care. And if you truly don't care, why take the extra effort to use gendered phrasing in the first place?
- generj 5mo agoIf you are worth $52 Billion how petty do you have to be to go after your ex girlfriend for cash for any reason? Also the arbiters write up is incredibly biased and not at all what I would expect a neutral party to write. “One can also conclude that Ritter engaged in self-centered efforts to obtain revenge against Schmidt in a way that was more damaging than helpful to her cause.” This is about a man who went after a girl less than half his age and then decided the power imbalance wasn’t severe enough so went into business with her as well. Are we really supposed to believe sexual assault is outside the realm of possibility in those circumstances?
- qsxfthnkp2322 5mo agoI mean just Look who you are talking about. This man took a major role in logging and selling every single thing about every single person without them noticing. He is sick in the head and a piece of shit human being for violating all of humanity’s privacy.
- final_aeon 5mo agoA rich guy is always a target for certain women that are motivated by money. He has every reason to protect his reputation and money by proactively settling the matter officially. Sexual assault is a serious allegation
- subscribed 5mo agoExcuse me, this was a false tape accusation, not an accidentally crashed supercar. I'd absolutely do the same, including forcing her to publish apology on all her SM accounts and in the press.
- rootsudo 5mo ago"If you are worth $52 Billion how petty do you have to be to go after your ex girlfriend for cash for any reason?" How is this petty? If a party was being legally liabile, this is 100% a reasonable vector for enforcement. "Also the arbiters write up is incredibly biased and not at all what I would expect a neutral party to write. “One can also conclude that Ritter engaged in self-centered efforts to obtain revenge against Schmidt in a way that was more damaging than helpful to her cause.”" That just means the evidence is exhausting, this is not a criminal court, there is no innocent until proven guilty - the level is much, much less to prove and there was a coordinated effort which means if a neutral arbirter can write the above, thats probably most likely what happened. "This is about a man who went after a girl less than half his age and then decided the power imbalance wasn’t severe enough so went into business with her as well. Are we really supposed to believe sexual assault is outside the realm of possibility in those circumstances?" That's biased itself, you write about bias but write it more so. If there was sexual assault it would be a criminal case - easily. So, why are you defending someone that openly accused someone of a sexual crime which did not happen? And I did not want to be writing to defend a google ceo, but here we are - why do you believe someone can accuse someone of a serious crime and not suffer reprecusions for it? Many people are accused falsely and have their repution ruined by it. There is no shortage of stories about it from all genders.

- foldr 5mo agoYes, it’s quite common for people to stay in abusive relationships, which can certainly include sexual abuse or rape.
- swarnie 5mo agoSomeone should look in to that, seems illogical.

- garciasn 5mo agoAssuming you're commenting in good faith, it has been looked into and it's a well-known behavior of those who are in abusive relationships. You can read more about it here: https://knowmore.fsu.edu/helping-healing/why-victims-stay https://knowmore.fsu.edu/helping-healing/why-victims-stay https://ifstudies.org/blog/eight-reasons-women-stay-in-abusive-relationships https://ifstudies.org/blog/eight-reasons-women-stay-in-abusi... https://www.thehotline.org/support-others/why-people-stay-in-an-abusive-relationship/ https://www.thehotline.org/support-others/why-people-stay-in... I am sure you can find many others with a simple search. It should help to inform you better for the future.
- Starman_Jones 5mo agoThe good news is that people have looked into it! And not just in a modern-slop-journalism kind of way, but in a serious, rigorous kind of way. And many of the resulting scientific papers are published online and available for you to read!
- EtienneDeLyon 5mo agoWomen falsely accuse men of rape and other serious crimes all the time. Isn't it better that he choose a judicial (or quasi-judicial) method to discourage this behavior rather than extrajudicial?
- jmye 5mo ago> Women falsely accuse men of rape and other serious crimes all the time. “All the time” meaning, what, specifically? Is there a reason you added this clear load of bullshit at all, or is it pure “virtue” signaling, for your given brand of “virtue”?

- jmye 5mo ago"I know you are but what am I" Unsurprising you're a coward.
- dzhiurgis 5mo agoWe had a chilling case in NZ recently. Woman got so drunk she puked in Uber and got kicked out. So she complained she got raped, but was found guilty of false claims. Got 12 months of home supervision whatever that is.
- duxup 5mo agoIt’s interesting that they signed an agreement and then it seems she decided it needed to be litigated / arbitration agreement shouldn’t stand, because of events before that agreement. That seems a bit absurd.
