The HN shadowbanning situation is insane
Why am I shadowbanned on my other account after just a couple of comments and no submissions? My home static IP is banned from creating accounts for no reason. What is wrong with you people? You f over new accounts left and right.
- dang 5mo agoIt looks like you've been breaking the site guidelines repeatedly and egregiously. When users create entire series of accounts to do that with, we tend to shadowban them. This is an obvious anti-abuse measure. If you don't want to be banned on HN, your best bet would be to review https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and stick to the rules. That includes not posting flamebait and/or unsubstantive comments, and not creating new accounts routinely.
- shadowbanned_hn 5mo agoYou know it's bs. One comment someone doesn't like results in a shadowban for a fairly new account. You get a couple of upvotes, then some downvotes and the account is finished. What's the point in using a shadowbanned account instead of creating a new one? Shadowbans don't expire, right?
- dang 5mo agoAssuming I'm looking at the correct related accounts, the situation is as I described it. If you want to say what posts/accounts you're talking about, I can take another look and check.
- froglang 5mo agoHi There, this is the first time I am posting on HN so my apologies if I have messed this up. I have read through the link you provided buy am struggling to see where or what I have done wrong here? Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks Karl
- dang 5mo agoMy post wasn't addressed to you! What made you think it was? Your account looks fine. I was responding to this post by the account named shadowbanned_hn: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48374365 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48374365. Does that make sense?
- SpecStudioHN 5mo agohe’s right; it happened to me too. new low-karma accounts can’t post anything without being banned, blocked or flagged. wanna bet they won’t even let me post this comment?
- anenefan 5mo agoI believe there's an algorithm that sifts though each submission if it makes the cut. I'm thinking if username is part of submission link - might be cause to weigh the submission harder. Anyhow, those that do happen to end up being marked dead ... it's then up to other users who are viewing new posts (including dead ones) to vouch for them, the forum is all day and folks like me only go back 4 or 5 hours to see if there's anything interesting including those that are dead that might be actually interesting. More often based on the title of the post alone for me to decide to look deeper. Most days I don't vouch a thing, today just the one. You'd IMO, done better to ask what others think is good taste when it comes to a product that's new or being updated.
