A Zipper Patent Sat in a Garage for 40 Years. Now It's Real.
- SirFatty 5mo agoIf Yanko Design hadn't been around for so long, I would swear the entire site is an AI fever dream.
- drcongo 5mo agoI'd never heard of it before, but that one article gave off a very strong AI odour. Could have at least added a video.

- readthenotes1 5mo agoI found the article fairly readable, maybe only twice as long as it needed to be. What is the relevance of the authorship?
- pjc50 5mo agoLinks to MIT source: https://news.mit.edu/2026/three-sided-y-zipper-design-0504 https://news.mit.edu/2026/three-sided-y-zipper-design-0504 I guess that means the patent has expired. Which is a common fate for these things: patenting a technology means that nobody else is going to develop it if the patentor doesn't. Zippers are in general a miracle of engineering tolerances, like LEGO. There's articles around about why YKK are considered to be the only decent manufacturer of them.
- cassianoleal 5mo agoVeritasium did a wonderful (as usual) video about them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9szhjhO9epA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9szhjhO9epA
