Show HN: Baby's First Cards – real photo flash cards for toddlers
App maker here. I built this because most flash card apps use cartoonish illustrations that don't help babies recognize real objects.
This app lets you take photos of real things around the house or pick from curated real photo sets.
Key features: • Take your own photos as flash cards • Record your own voice for each card • Pre-loaded kits with high-quality real photos and real animal sounds • Bilingual (English and Chinese) mode • Fully offline, no ads, no data collection • One-time purchase, no subscription

- gus_massa 5mo agoThe photo with the baby with the ipad is strange. My kids have a tablet (Samsung) but it has a huge rubber wrapper, otherwise the screen gets broken too easily. But I guess the huge rubber protector is not nice in photos. Are you planing to add more languages? [Hi from Argentina!] Does it has a feature to forbid the kid to close the app? Otherwise kids will learn to escapa and go to YouTube or something...
- ailocalrecorder 5mo agoThanks for the thoughtful feedback! You're right — in real life, most kids use tablets with thick protective cases. That photo was just a simplified demo. Spanish is on our plan. Hope to add it soon! You're also correct that third‑party apps can't fully lock a child inside the app — iOS doesn't allow that for security reasons. However, parents can use Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access). Once enabled, the device stays in one app and needs a passcode to exit. We recommend turning it on before handing the tablet to little ones.
