We (in the US) have a political system where the other side isn't just portrayed as being wrong.. but being immoral monsters looking to destroy: people, businesses, society, women, families, gays, religion, etc, etc. When everyone claims those are the stakes, everything looks like it's life or death.. and every little loss is monumental.
