I thought java had switched to using a slightly more optimal lock xadd for AtomicInteger/etc updates? (see http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7023898 http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=7023898) Doesn't address the main issue of memory synchronization between cores, but should make things a little better?

This fix is very recent. Not sure whether it's in the stable builds of JDK 7.
