I think the point is that they have innovated and patented along the way, but now seem to have stopped innovating and have become sharks that patent generalized ideas, thus suffocating the industry.
Real industry leaders move quick and create a new product as legendary as the original iPhone, rather than pose on their laurels and scream "you can't do that!! We did it first!"
