I think messaging (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_passing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_passing) has always been an important aspect of OOP that was somehow "missed".

For varying reasons, people focused on inheritance. In my opinion, inheritance is bad (at least the over-use of).
