Yea, this was the part of the article I was missing too. I worked for Sony Computer Entertainment for a period around 2005. I can partly see the "engineering-centric in a bad way" thing, but to put the blame there for Sony failing to launch an MP3 player before Apple... Seriously, Sony Music killed it of course.
