Ask HN: Why is splitting bills still so painful in 2026?
- MattGaiser 6mo agoI recall in university that many of these existed but all died as soon as they wanted payment. This seems like airline seat space. People find small seats painful. They find paying anything extra even more painful.
- allenalux 6mo agoFair point — that's the graveyard of this category. My current thinking: keep it free and see if it's actually useful first. Monetization only makes sense if retention is real. What killed those apps — the paywall itself, or the retention already weak before they charged.
- blitzar 6mo agoIts not - filter out the people who order the lobster and insist that they should pay less because their caviar was a smaller portion than your salad. Dine with people you like and respect and take it in turns to pick up the bill. Also if you are the person that gets the caviar, lobster and 2 cocktails and the other person gets a salad and tapwater - you are paying.
- allenalux 6mo agoHaha, that make sense. Seems taking turns to pay bill is more favorable. Just one follow up question: the motivation to take turn to pay bill is because that make payers feel good to take care of the bill, or because splitting bill take time, thus taking turn feel much easier.
- beardyw 6mo agoBecause nobody makes money from it.
- JohnFen 6mo agoIt's not painful, at least in my social circle. Typically, one person pays the bill and everyone else settles up with that person later. If that's not possible, then it's separate checks and everyone pays their own bill. In truth, one of us will usually just pay the bill without worrying about settling up later, and we round-robin who's paying. I count that as a form of "settle up later" regardless.
- allenalux 6mo agoI often go out with different groups of friends, so we usually split the bill. It’s manageable, but it always turns into a small hassle trying to remember who ordered what, and run the math on tax and tips. I'm thinking to have a small tool for payer scan the receipt with detailed items and tax, and tips. then the e-bill to the table and let others to claim what they order, and the tool helps calculate tax and tip based on shared. But not quite sure whether it would be helpful for others.
