It is amazing to see such a change in the industry: this title is something nearly every single developer could've said ~two years ago, now anyone claiming to code by hand is almost like an endangered species.
- stingraycharles 6mo agoIt worries me that I’m losing my muscle memory, especially for the new technologies and programming languages I have been working with over the past year (as it’s suddenly so much easier to get shit done), and I feel like I’m creating a knowledge debt as I go. I’m very concerned about how the next generation of software engineers will pick up deep knowledge about this stuff, if at all.
- armchairhacker 6mo ago“Writing by hand” two years ago is analogous to writing without an IDE, which was rare.
- andersmurphy 6mo agoThe bigger change is those that do write by hand have stopped open sourcing their work. The age of sharing innovation for free is quickly coming to an end. I also expect a bunch of open source/open core projects to go closed source in the next few months.
- Hrun0 6mo agoYC startups still have to be open source though, right?
- leg100 6mo agoI'm not sure if that's the case. Of course one has always been able to copy or plagiarise open source code. The value of open source projects is that they continue to be maintained by people that understand the code base. LLM's lifting that code doesn't change that.
