Spotify launches in Ireland
- ShaneOG 14y agoFinally! If you previously used Spotify through a proxy you have to change your registered country (to Ireland) in your profile before you can login to the app.
- dave84 14y agoIf you don't want to sign up using Facebook, go to the homepage and click signup from there. Edit: I know my father would love this service but he doesn't have a Facebook account (and never will) and he'd likely have just given up at the point of being asked to sign up with Facebook. Edit2: Just had a play around with Spotify for the hour there. It's brilliant.
- nicholassmith 14y agoI know a few people who've seen the Facebook requirement and switched off, even after being told there's a non-Facebook way to do it.
- dave84 14y agoYup. It's even put me off telling some people about it, they don't have facebook, they're not amazingly technical and I'll have to talk them through the sign-up online.
- s_henry_paulson 14y agoI'm in that camp. It's also interesting because I close the tab on 50-70% of the "Hey HN, look what I made" posts for the same reason. (requiring Facebook)
- destraynor 14y agoIt's a tricky one. As a product owner there are massive benefits to having Facebook accounts over your own login system. I don't like it either but being able to tap into friend networks & social activity streams is really useful: http://blog.intercom.io/designing-for-viral-distribution/ http://blog.intercom.io/designing-for-viral-distribution/ http://blog.intercom.io/measuring-viral-distribution/ http://blog.intercom.io/measuring-viral-distribution/ Spotify is the poster child of the sort of success that it brings, pretty much every interaction (play, fave, playlist etc) is streamed to FB constantly spreading the word about Spotify. Not saying it's "cool" , just that it's a very sensible thing for a business owner to shoot for. Des
- leoc 14y agoWhere on the homepage? If there's a non-Facebook way to create an account, it's now well hidden.
- dave84 14y agoGo to spotify.com and click on Sign up in the top right hand corner of the page. On that page there should be a link under the big facebook F: "create an account using your e-mail address" You may need to log out of Facebook if you're logged in.
- leoc 14y ago> On that page there should be a link under the big facebook F: "create an account using your e-mail address" There's no such alternative link for me. I don't know for sure if this is Spotify and Facebook tracking my identity, or if there's no non-FB option for Irish users: I'm logged in to FB on Win7 Chrome here, but I don't get a non-FB option when I try in an incognito window or when I switch to a different Windows user account on this machine, one which belongs to someone with no FB account.
- dave84 14y agoI'm Irish, just signed up this morning using that link. Here's a screenshot of what I see, I put a red box around the link: http://i.imgur.com/e7dKT.png http://i.imgur.com/e7dKT.png Edit: I would link you dorectly to the form but unless you click on it from the Spotify page it doesn't work.
- leoc 14y ago> Here's a screenshot of what I see Yes. This is what I see: http://imgur.com/mYVH2 http://imgur.com/mYVH2 > I'm Irish, just signed up this morning using that link. I assume that Spotify and Facebook are doing some pretty energetic identity-tracking, then.

- burriko 14y agoGood news, but sadly it's yet another country in which Spotify is charging much less than they charge the UK. Apparently £9.99 = €9.99 = $9.99.
- danielhunt 14y agoThis is the first time, in the history of the internet, I've seen a cheaper price for something available in Ireland after having been launched elsewhere. I was fully expecting a pricetag of 20e for premium.
