Seems like good advice when having to make weightier decisions, but when it comes to decisons of the heart, not so much.
On a related note, I remember hearing about a study (this is going back almost a decade now) showing that those who live in poverty were often found to have poor decision-making skills.
The findings sounds both obvious and patently unfair, but I wonder if anyone else has heard of a study like that. A link would be great.
- c0riander 14y agoA quick Google search turns up several interesting studies. Here's a link to a good APA overview of a few of them: http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/willpower-poverty-financial.pdf http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/willpower-poverty-financial.pd...
- jasonshen 14y agoI think part of the problem is that especially with decisions of the heart, people make short sighted choices. For example, people who marry young (sub 20) should realize they probably don't have enough information to make that choice. They may not regret their decision later (cognitive dissonance) but they probably could have better optimized. If this doesn't convince you, at least consider the fact that doing this exercise will allow you to be more sure of your "gut" decision should they align and be a tad more wary of it should they disagree.
