Windows 11 after two decades of macOS: okay, but also awful
- givemeethekeys 7mo agoWhenever I have to use Windows, I am reminded of the things I dislike: - The fonts. Sorry, but you can defend Windows all you want, but I have a much easier time reading on a Mac than I do on a Windows machine. - The malware. Holy shit. This computer is trying to fleece me from the get go! - Some defaults make no sense, but the only way to disable them means having to go deep in the OS, change a setting, and then restart the computer. Holy shit! What if I blew something up?! - Since trust was broken early on, I'm forced to install 3rd party software for nearly every task. - The whole thing feels corporate, but maybe I was never the target audience anyway!
- joe_mamba 7mo agoYour opinions on fonts and defaults are highly subjective and biased. Same how to me coming from Linux and Windows, every time I have to use Mac I dislike the fonts and defaults, like WTF, people actually tolerate this?! You assume your muscle memory from one OS is the only right way, but it's not. It's just what you got used to. There's no objective better here. That's like saying a couch is objectively more comfortable.
- yibers 7mo agoIt is my understanding that actually for Mac one is "forced" to install many 3rd party tools to get features that in Windows are considered basic, for example window auto snapping.
- PufPufPuf 7mo agoI converted (not by choice) to Mac. Applications that I need to "fix" macOS: - MOS (free) / Mac Mouse Fix ($3, has some neat extra features) -- without these, mouse scrollwheel is practically unusable - Karabiner Elements (free) -- to fix modifier keys layout to be consistent with Linux / Windows - Ukelele (free) -- modify keyboard layout to match Linux / Windows First is needed only if you use a mouse with a wheel. Last two are just for my unwillingness to learn the Mac layout, since I still use other systems regularly. I also used to have an app that would close an app after I closed the last window (curiously most apps on Mac keep running after that and you need to close them from right click menu), but I got used to it. Window snapping was fixed in macOS 15, special apps are only necessary if you have a 32:9 monitor, otherwise the built-in support is solid.
- joe_mamba 7mo ago>Mac Mouse Fix ($3 Wait, are you telling me that MacOS, the "embodiment of perfection", needs paid apps for mouse to be usable? lol; lmao even.
- PufPufPuf 7mo agoMOS is free, but Mac Mouse Fix lets you perform some touch gestures with a mouse (e.g. switching virtual desktops). But yeah, look at how the official Apple mouse looks, they have terrible support for "normal" ones.
- bwat49 7mo agoI haven't had issues with malware since windows vista
- joe_mamba 7mo agoDo you expect objective well throught out options from users who use Windows for 5 minutes every few years? Imagine tourists who visit your country for a weekend telling you what's wrong with your country.
- tim-tday 7mo agoI hear Linux is nice.
