Is launching a product on here a thing
Just curious what the norm is here with sharing product launches. Obviously don't want a ton of people spamming this for product launches but just curious what thoughts are
- Jtsummers 8mo agohttps://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsfaq.html Read those. If you're just using the site for self-promotion you are likely to get shadowbanned. HN is meant to be a community, self-promotion is allowed but should not be your primary (and definitely not exclusive) use of the site. It'll likely get flagged and eventually caught by the moderators.
- charliewehan10 8mo agothanks for the guidance haha dont want to get shadow banned
- goodmythical 8mo agoIt's called "ShowHN" and is located at the top of the page. Here's the rules: https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html https://news.ycombinator.com/showhn.html
- beardyw 8mo agoFor Show HN there is an expectation that you talk about technology more than how it will change our lives.
- charliewehan10 8mo agoappreciate you!
- charliewehan10 8mo agothank you!! I appreciate the help
- ThrowawayR2 8mo agoIt says "Show HN is for something you've made that other people can play with." so it's not really an invitation to post for-profit product launch ads. Most Show HN projects that gain traction are personal projects. In fact, the tips page (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22336638 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22336638) that's linked from the Show HN guidelines directly says "Drop any language that sounds like marketing or sales. On HN, that is an instant turnoff. Use factual, direct language. Personal stories and technical details are great.
- ThrowawayR2 8mo agoUnless it's egregiously inappropriate for HN, you can probably post once or twice and people will be fine with it. You might have slightly better luck if you submit it as a Show HN; someone else has already posted the appropriate guidelines. Don't be disappointed if it doesn't get much attention; most project launches in /new don't get much attention, much less make it to the front page.
- gus_massa 8mo agoA few more recommendations: For the title use "$Name: $Catchprase", something like "Yellowana: Track how many bananas you eat dayly", hopefully something that makes more sense. Don't hide you are the author/owner. Moreover, a few minutes later post a short comment explaining you are the author and will be available to answer questions. Some short backstory or techs stack description may be welcome. Do you have a blog? If you have some interesting problem you solved with your app or an interesting problem you solved while writing the app, they may be good post. But they must be interesting. Just in case, no AI slope.
