I think it is more that programming has a pop culture, not that it is a pop culture. Parser combinator avoidance is a good example. The pop culture does avoid it, but not everyone is part of that. Parsec and attoparsec are very heavily used in haskell land. Just as there's people who reject or ignore pop culture in society. Society isn't pop culture, it just has a pop culture (or several pop cultures).
