In addition to System76's thoughtful response here, does anyone have a good _personal_ plan for what to do? Possibilities I'm thinking about include:
- Switch to a non-compliant distro. (could put me in a dead end down the line depending on what happens)
- Find a browser that can block the API access and just use two browsers.
- Have an "online accounts" computer and an "old fashioned" computer?
- Switch to books and DVDs?
- glitchc 7mo agoIt's self attesting. Just set your year of birth to 1970.
- senfiaj 7mo agoBut if they see a weird distribution of birth dates, won't they come up with even more insane regulations?
- hellojesus 7mo agoWait until they learn about live booting, VMs, keyloggers, etc. The goal of this bill is to set precedent that this can be regulated by the gov. Five years down the line they will complain it's not working and move to require tpm-based remote attlestation to prove the software isn't altered in order the authenticate with an isp.
- everdrive 7mo agoI think it depends. The OS provides an API signal -- presumably that websites can access. So if a site decides you're lying, what happens then? For instance, 100% of bots and malicious actors will lie, unless they think they can get what they need by being a child.
- hellojesus 7mo agoAnd some adults will lie too, assuming they don't need adult content, to avoid being tracked for advertisements, if laws exist that prevent ad targetting on some demo, say <13 year Olds.
