Slab tearing and segmented subduction termination driven by transform tectonics
- gus_massa 7mo agoFor a quick idea of what is this about, look at figure 9 and 10: https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/sciadv.ady8347#:~:text=Fig.%209.%20Slab%20fragmentation%20and%20cessation%20of%20subduction%20enabled%20by%20the%20NFZ. https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/sciadv.ady8347#:~:t... https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/sciadv.ady8347#:~:text=Fig.%2010.%20Piecewise%20plate%20fragmentation%2C%20slab%20detachment%2C%20and%20segmented%20subduction%20termination%20driven%20by%20transform%20tectonics. https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/sciadv.ady8347#:~:t... IIUC they are analyzing how the tear in the slab changed in the last million years. Also, the graphic avoids showing another slab that is over like 1/3 of the graphic and a lot of mud that is over them. It' would be super nice to have a video that shows the changes in time, that also includes the other slab as a semi transparent object.
