NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has achieved a landmark engineering milestone by repurposing Ingenuity's idle Qualcomm Helicopter Base Station and Perseverance using the same hardware architecture found in 1990s Apple iMacs — running Wind River VxWorks as the real-time operating system powering both the rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter whose orbital imagery makes this localization capability possible.
